For years, Space Island had been bringing the Space Wench to the playa. Each year, the vehicle would be completely overhauled and re-imagined from the ground up. As work commenced on re-tooling the ship in summer 2005, it became apparent that the truck that the ship was built on wasn't going to make it.Being space pirates, there seemed only one solution: scuttle the ship. Abandoning the old wench on the streets of Los Angeles in early July, the collective began searching for a new vehicle. An Isuzu box truck was found at the San Diego auto auction, and over the next month the crew set to work transforming the commercial truck into the biggest and best Space Wench ever. Trilo worked with Stefano Novelli and the rest of the Space Island crew to design and build this most magnificent mutant vehicle.
The ship weighed in at 38 1/2 feet long, 13 1/2 feet high, and just over 8 feet wide (barely within the limits to drive on the streets and highways between Los Angeles and Black Rock City). Once arriving on the playa, an outer hull consisting of a rebar frame and stretch chrome spandex was attached (bringing the dinal width to over 12 feet), and the Space Wench was ready to set sail. The gallery shows the ship under construction, as well as on the playa.
